Sports, Drama, Snakes, Movies, Legos, Pizza....a week filled with fun and adventure!
In this year’s Sports, Skills & Thrills Summer Camp, our campers will be exposed to various sporting disciplines. While our primary sport is volleyball, our sessions will include other sports such as touch-tag rugby, badminton, football, road tennis and more; as we believe cross-training is beneficial to the development of motor skills among active youth.
Our typical day at camp consist of icebreakers and warm-up activities, volleyball sessions with our volleyball coaches Shari Matthews and Anicia Wood, and a session facilitated by our invited guest. In the evening, our youth development coordinator – Asha Farrell, facilitates our life-skill activities which can be indoor or outdoor sessions focused on building skills such as teamwork, respect, communication, discipline, confidence and other inter-related skills.
In our volleyball sessions, we introduce the basic techniques of forearm passing, serving, setting and spiking. Throughout the week we added mini volleyball games to highlight the basic skills taught. It was encouraging to see during lunch breaks, campers coordinating games and taking the initiative to practice their newly learnt skills.
This week we had three guest facilitators join us. On Tuesday despite the heat and humidity, our campers were eager to learn the basic principles of rugby. With the guidance of Kevin Murrell from ‘Get into Rugby Barbados’, our campers enjoyed the fundamentals of rugby through various games which emphasized on changes of speed and direction whilst maintaining control of the rugby ball.
On Wednesday, Aunty Asha from Mustard Seed Productions was super energetic, and such reflected with the campers. Asha touched on areas such as pronunciation and the projection of voices through various theatrical exercises and fun tongue twister games. On the final day of week one, Mr. Reifer from CeeVision Sports Academy conducted an introductory badminton session. The session began with balloon balancing games which progressed into balancing the bird/shuttle onto the badminton racquets and consequently hitting the bird/shuttle over the net. Unlike our rugby and drama sessions, which many of our campers experienced before, badminton was a new learning exercise for many.
Our first tour took us to the south of the island to “The MariZayra’s Sanctuary” in Well House St. Philip. The informational tour guide at the sanctuary showcased and informed us about animals such turtles, birds, snakes, iguanas, frogs and much more. At the end of the tour, a few campers displayed little or no fear as they posed for photos with a snake around their necks.
During the week we went through various team-building activities and games. Our campers particularly enjoyed our book-making activity and showed their creativity daily as they made various structures using Lego building blocks.
Week two is filled with much more excitement…we hope to see you there!
